Q:

What makes a sword fencing activity suitable for a corporate event?

A:

Sword fencing is one of the most exhilirating and fun combat sports with a history stretching back thousands of years. In addition, because participants have often never fenced before, it provides a shared challenge with a common sense of achievment for your team or clients. It has also been described as 'physical chess', and in this respect it is well suited to a strategic business environment.

Q:

What equipment will we use in the session?

A:

We use the latest 'midi' fence equipment that is safe and fun to use as well as being ideal for teaching the basics of the sport. The swords are of equivalent size to regular sword fencing 'foils' and have buzzers on the end to register hits, while the chest protectors provide an added fun element and a recognisable target area. The masks are high quality and not dissimilar to regular sword fencing masks for use with metal weapons. A recent addition is that we also use British Fencing Association approved gloves to protect the sword hand.

Q:

What are the venue requirements for a sword fighting session?

A:

We need a firm, non-slip floor (grass ok in summer - see link here) usually of a minimum size of 20m x 10m, however this is negotiable if you only have a smaller space and would like us to tailor the session to suit - for more details visit our venues information page by clicking here

Q:

Where can you hold events geographically?

A:

Anywhere nationally or even globally within reason - although we generally operate in the North West of England, we will work further afield for a surcharge (see areas covered) and are happy to host events in any national or international location of your choosing, costing and travelling availibility permitting.

Q:

Do we need to find our own venue?

A:

Yes, we have found that the particular requirements of each different company vary so much (e.g. conference / country getaway / site-based etc.) that you need to source a venue that fits both your needs and our minimum requirements as listed here

Q:

Does fencing hurt?

A:

No, the protective equipment we use ensures complete safety. In fact, we have made the sport even safer as the chest protectors are a supplementary addition that are not usually required when using 'midi-fence' equipment. We also have a requirement for long sleeved tops to prevent taps on the arms from the plastic blades (see clothing requirements question).

Q:

How much do you charge?

A:

Typically between £15 and £25 for a one to two hour session, though these prices may vary based on your particular needs - click here for more details on prices

Q:

What are your billing proceedures?

A:

We will invoice you at the time of booking and expect payment either on the day of the event or within 7 days of the event date.

Q:

How many participants do you cater for?

A:

Any number - a group of 20-30 is an ideal number but we have taught many more by simply timetabling sessions (e.g. 5 sessions of 20, meaning 100 participants) or employing additional coaches.

Q:

What are the clothing requirements?

A:

Essential: trainers, long sleeved tops (shirt sleeves are fine)

Recommended: long trousers

Q:

We don't want people to be turned away - will you allow people to fence if they turn up without this clothing?

A:

Within reason (no high heels please!) but it will be made clear at the event that they fence at their own risk

Q:

What other related services do you offer?

A:

In addition to our standard sword fighting packages, we can also offer many extras such as the attendance of constumed actors, trophies and much more - find out more about our services by clicking here

Q:

Are you fully qualified sword fencing coaches?

A:

Of course - our main event coaches are fully qualified to a high standard by the British Fencing Association, and have years of competitive and social sword fencing experience, whilst our assistant coaches have all been through at the least a company training programme, and many have their own BFA awards too.

Q:

Are you fully insured?

A:

Certainly - our insurance documents are available to view at any time by email request at info@balestra.co.uk

Q:

Do you hold CRB certificates if our event involves working with children?

A:

Yes - we hold current CRB certificates, also available to view on email request at info@balestra.co.uk

Q:

Fencing looks so strenuous! What fitness level does it require?

A:

Fencing can be as fast paced or relaxed as you like - we are experienced coaches, accustomed to coaching people of different fitness levels - and will not push you beyond your physical limit. However, if you feel that any members of your party have underlying health problems, then we recommend that they seek medical advice before undertaking any sporting activity.

Q:

What areas do you cover?

A:

As we are based in the North West of England, we readily offer team building events in related areas within a general 50 mile radius, though we are happy to travel countrywide and even worldwide for a further fee. Local areas we have worked in include Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, Preston, Salford, Bolton, Oldham, Stockport, Cheadle, Bury, Tameside, Saddleworth, Blackpool and Merseyside to name but a few.
