But that is not all that sword fencing has in common with the corporate arena. The need to survive, to hit or be hit, which provoked mankind to take up weapons in the first place is a prominent concern of businesses in today's economy, as are corporate, team and personal targets.
All of these aspects are of course quite literally represented in a bout of sword fencing, where personal drive, guile and clarity of thought will always beat the less strategic, brutal opponent who just comes "charging" in with sabre flying.
Added to this, the beauty of modern fencing is that, stripped of the danger that once made it a life or death activity, we are now left with a distilled version that retains all of the positive aspects mentioned above, which makes for a truly memorable team building, promotional event or client entertainment event with unique parallels to business.
Long before sword fencing was used for such diverse purposes as team building, client entertainment and promotional events by a company such as ours, the act of fighting an opponent with a sharpened weapon was a much more serious activity.
One thing that hasn't changed however is the same principles of attack and defence that we see in modern Olympic fencing bouts today and that we teach in our own sword fencing team building sessions.
For example, in modern competitive sword fencing, the current right of way rule dictates that a fencer must parry an opponent's attack before making his/her own - considered - attack. This is just one reason why fencing is so suited to the strategic cut and thrust of a business environment and is often referred to as a game of "physical chess".
